What you do

The Scavengers is a mobile game you play on foot. Your city is the board.

The hunt map: numbered stops on a dotted trail

Walk the real city

The hunt follows your phone's GPS. Clues lead you to real places: statues, blue plaques, old buildings and hidden corners.

A riddle clue card titled Cryptic Quest

Crack riddles and photo clues

Read the riddle, find the spot, type the answer or take the photo. Photos are checked on your own phone.

The Man offers a puzzle: Turn the stone rings

Take The Man's puzzles

A mysterious puzzle-master turns up with 21 kinds of brain-teaser. Beat one for treasure, or practise in the Enigma Rooms.

The map with a tank, its range rings and a bomber near the player's blue dot

Dodge the siege engines

Tanks, spider tanks and a bomber roam the map and hunt for you. Keep moving, fire a flare or raise a shield.

Battle items: Health Kit, shields, supply radio, team radio and a flare

Battle rival teams

Hunt against other teams in the same city. Play battle cards, call in supply crates and lob the odd stink bomb.

The Enigma Rooms: a torch-lit hall of wooden doors

Earn your rank

Win medals, XP and coins, climb your city's leaderboard and dress your explorer in the silliest hats in the expedition.

Look out!

Someone doesn't want you to find the treasure.

Comic card: the General runs from a tank down a cobbled street

The tank

Rolls along the real roads towards you at a brisk walking pace. Stay out of its range.

Comic card: a steampunk spider tank strides over a terraced street

The spider tank

Climbs straight over buildings and lobs mortar shells. When the card says INCOMING, move.

Comic card: a bomber flies low over the street as the General dives for cover

The bomber

Swoops in to bomb your patch. Fire a flare and it bombs the flare instead.

They live on your map, not in the street. Keep your eyes up and mind real traffic.

How it works

  1. Gather your crew

Run solo, or host a hunt and share a code or QR so friends can join your team, or form rival teams.

  2. Hunt on foot

The hunt starts where you stand. Follow the clues, solve them at the spot and keep an eye on the clock.

  3. Bring the treasure home

Finish for your team's score, XP and a place on the city board, and a medal ceremony if you've earned one.

The cast

You never hunt alone.

The General: a moustached old soldier in a camouflage jacket and helmet, pointing the way

The General Your guide

Narrates the hunt, cheers you on, warns you when a tank is close and has a "Did you know?" for every landmark.

The Man: a grinning adventurer in a battered brown fedora

The Man The puzzle-master

Pops up mid-hunt with a puzzle and a deal. Ciphers, gears, idols and rolling relics: take him on if you dare.

The Benefactor: a figure in a long coat and hat looking out over Belfast at sunset

The Benefactor A friend in the shadows

The mysterious patron who sends you on the expedition. He tells the story, and looks out for young explorers.

Where to hunt

Belfast first. Then the sun.

Home city

Belfast

Where the expedition began: clues built from the city's landmarks, statues and plaques, a Statues of Belfast collection to scan, and offline packs for Belfast and East Belfast.

Holiday hunts

Rhodes, Greece

Hand-researched clues around the island, with six offline packs:

  • Rhodes Town and its medieval Old Town
  • Lindos and the south
  • Kiotari and the east and west coasts

Somewhere else? The game builds a hunt from open map data around wherever you start, with walking zones where landmarks are thin on the ground.
